An exhibition about a motion picture camera might seem a strange fit for a natural history museum – unless one is familiar with its inventor, museum collector/conservationist/taxidermist Carl Akeley. Then it all makes sense. The following is a brief sketch of how an exhibit centering on the Akeley motion picture camera, which ran at Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History in 2018-19, came to pass.
