The Material History of a Nitrate Film, Part 2: Preservation - Text 6
The situation has dramatically changed since then, but the problem continues to haunt film curators and laboratory technicians; there is something missing in the chromatic palette of silent films as seen through modern reproductions in general, whether by analogue or by non-analogue means. Laudable and necessary as it is, the objective of accurately replicating the colours of silent films on a systematic basis – that is, from the vast collections of original elements held by film museums and archives worldwide – is no less illusory than it was in the early days of colour film preservation.
