The Production Designer in Animation: The Case of Persepolis - Text 4
Clearly, there is back and forth among the various branches of the production: between the hand-drawn decor and the layout, but also between the outlines of the figures and the decor, in order to provide the best possible integration. The decors often contain the characters as they pose in the sequence.
One of the particularities of Persepolis is that it involved a stage in which each character was drawn by hand. Bringing these two elements together was done with two goals in mind: first of all, to be able to manage the composition of the image, taking into account the mass of the character or characters; and second, to be able to manage the depths of the characters according to the framing. Because the depths also influence the work of highlighting a character.
