Cutting - Text 5
It thus seems obvious that because of the growth in the quantity of prints, alongside increasing numbers of editing effects (alternation, intercalation, the rapid succession of very brief tableaux, etc.) and of photographic effects (colour timing, tinting, etc.), prints tended to be weakened. These first two cutting operations (establishing the reference negative and then positive exhibition prints) were thus often followed by a third, having to do with film exhibition. The fragile positive prints regularly needed repair when the print was broken, either by the projectionist or by the film rental agencies or “exchanges,” where films were regularly revised.
