Nervous System and Nervous Magic Lantern - Text 3

In 1990, Jacobs developed another configuration, with a single projector and no film print, which he called the Nervous Magic Lantern. Taking up the magic lantern set-up, he reformulated the configuration of the Nervous System: in this case, he would manipulate an object or a slide placed between the beam of light and the lens while a rotating blade located in front of the lantern produced flicker. The projected image had no defined contours and most often resembled an abstract voluminous structure emanating from the light – and affected by slight movements of depth, to which were added ripples created by a small fan. To this were added the perception of three dimensions created by the stroboscope effect of the action of the propeller combined with the repositioning of the image, rounding out an experience with a tinge of hallucination.
