A (Plat)Form between Media - Text 1

Addressing issues around dissemination, whether these issues are related to the objects or to the tools which fashion them, is in our view a way of rethinking the web documentary phenomenon both from a perspective of indeterminacy and in conjunction with the determinations of the period in which it emerged. “Interactive online documentary” (the term used by Frederik Rieckher, author of Soul Patron); “database documentary” (in the words of the development team and creators-users of Korsakow software); “multimedia documentary” [documentaire multimédia] (the name chosen by the Web platform of France Télévisions for all of its offerings); “documentary game” [“jeu documentaire”] (the term used for certain popular productions such as Fort McMoney); and “documentary with the Web” [“documentaire avec le Web”] (in the words of the creator David Dufresne): these are some of the formulations which, under the vast heading “digital storytelling,” can be superimposed on that of the “webdoc.” The task then becomes to isolate to what the term “web documentary” refers while at the same time situating it within this diversity of names and various documentary practices to which they refer.
