In order to avoid time consuming comings and goings, beginning in the late 1910s small portable projectors were sometimes used where the assembly was carried out. This practice was made possible by improvements to these projectors in the latter half of the decade. From 1915 to 1924, portable projector brands and models grew in number, a phenomenon that can be accounted for by the growth in projection needs with respect to non-fiction films in the non-theatrical sphere: classroom use, religious screenings, demonstration films screened in the course of off-site product sales visits, etc.
