Description
In the chapter “Regieschere” (“film directing's scissors”) of his book Die Zappelnde Leinwand (1916, which translates literally as “The Wriggling Screen”), the filmmaker Max Mack explains that the film director must organise the filmed material and compose the film, an activity he describes as schneiden (cutting) and which literally means to cut everything that is superfluous. According to Mack, the goal of this operation was to create the rhythm and suspense of the action.
