In addition to the terms that designated editing itself, the trade press used terms to designate particular forms of editing, such as the “cut-back,” which refers to what we now call crosscutting – where the cutting back (and forth) assumes a primarily spatial function, alternating between two distinct zones of diegetic action. But it also seems intended to describe cutting across a temporal divide, as in a flashback.
