Caroline Leaf

Caroline Leaf was born on 12 August 1946 in Seattle. In the late 1960s, while studying art at Harvard University, she took a course in animation given by Derek Lamb. In 1969, she used sand to make her first animated film, Sand or Peter and the Wolf. In response to an invitation by the NFB, she moved to Montreal in 1972, where she would work for this institution until 1991. During this period, Leaf experimented with diverse animation techniques (for the most part, sand and painting on glass) and also made short documentary films. Her animated films were shown in numerous festivals and received a variety of prizes and awards. Caroline Leaf has also taught animation at various schools and universities (Harvard; Konstfack in Sweden; the National Film and Television School in England) and conducted animation workshops.
