Alexandre Desplat and the Renewal of the Timbre of Hollywood Symphonies: Programmed Sounds as a Form of Casting the Orchestra into Relief with Magical Effect - Text 3
The Phantom Role of Programmed Sounds in the Orchestra
In films such as Twilight, The Danish Girl and The Shape of Water, crystalline percussion instruments such as the celesta, glockenspiel, vibraphone and bowed vibraphone come from digital sound libraries, because in this way they are clearer and more precise (with respect to the attack in particular). The composer can create an effect and, in the mixing, intensify the presence of an instrument with a naturally subdued sound: this is the case for example with the bowed vibraphone underscoring each supernatural appearance, through telepathy, of Edward to Bella in Twilight.
