Cantar - Text 5

A Collective Device – Like the Work of Film Creation

The Cantar was conceived and thought out collectively. Sound recordists such as François Musy and Jean-Pierre Duret worked on it right from the drawing stage. Setting up a listserv made it possible to create a true network around the Cantar. This network contributed both to the evolution of the device and to the bonding of operators around it across geographical frontiers. Sound recordists who owned a Cantar had access to this listserv, but so too did anyone who rented one and other film professionals, particularly designers of audio editing software. This diversity was essential, because the shift to eight tracks had an impact on the entire production chain and was not limited to upsetting the work habits of the sound recordist on set. In this way Beauviala made it possible for professionals of different descriptions to connect, facilitating the change of paradigm.
