Pierre Hébert

Pierre Hébert was born on 19 January 1944 in Montreal. Following studies in anthropology, which led to an interest in archaeology, he began working for the NFB in 1965. He very quickly devoted himself to the drawing on film technique, which would become his principal method, although he would also try his hand at other methods, such as paper cut-outs (Explosion démographique, 1968; Le Corbeau et le Renard, 1969; Père Noël, père Noël, 1974), abstract and combinatory animation (Opus 1, 1964; Opus 3, 1966; Autour de la perception, 1968), and collage (Étienne et Sara, 1984).

After leaving the NFB, Pierre Hébert returned to drawing on film using a different approach, that of live performances: he draws in the presence of an audience to accompany musical performances. His most recent work largely employs digital retouching (La statue de Giordano Bruno, 2005; the series Lieux et monuments, 2010-; Le film de Bazin, 2017).
