Cranks and Motors - Text 9
Another development connected to the growing enthusiasm for camera movements was borrowed from devices designed for amateur use. Pathé and Kodak had both launched, in 1922 and 1923 respectively, cameras and projectors using the new 9.5 mm and 16 mm film amateur gauges. Like their professional 35 mm counterparts, the first small-gauge cameras marketed by Pathé and Kodak were driven by a crank. The makers of small-gauge film equipment soon noticed, however, that amateur filmmakers frequently hand-held their cine-camera while shooting, just as if it were a snapshot camera.
