Introduction - Text 3
To think in terms of the audience, we can say that this technical evolution led from uni-directional listening (a single speaker behind the screen) to more immersive listening after stereophonic sound became widely used in the 1970s and 80s. Since the development of digital sound, with six speakers (in 5.1) and then even more in systems such as Atmos, we can speak of immersive listening which sometimes becomes multi-dimensional. In such systems, it is possible to create the impression that an object or character is moving through the space of the movie theatre.
This overall technical evolution raises the question of spatializing sound. Do we really receive the same film if the sound systems used are completely different from one exhibition venue to the next?
