Another cause for the growing popularity of motors might have been the fad for extreme camera movements in the late silent era. The team formed by director F.W. Murnau, cinematographer Karl Freund and camera operator Günther Rittau helped jump-start this trend when they decided to “unleash” the camera – that is, to get it to move freely – on the set of The Last Laugh (Der letzte Mann, 1924).
