The vast majority of moving picture cameras designed in the days of silent cinema took up the elegant solution devised by Louis Lumière and Jules Carpentier. The Pathé Professionnelle equipping many of the film studios active in the years leading up to the First World War even duplicated the position – at the rear, and not on the right – of the crank on the Cinématographe.
