Introduction - Text 3
Through the activities of practitioners in assembling strips of film, and through various procedures they carried out, the establishment of editing as a practice became possible, before it became standardised. The word “editing” (“montage” [“assembly”] in French) is thus the name that was gradually attributed to the concept which brought together the various technemes of assembly in a new hierarchical configuration destined to become the norm. After meeting a principle of dispersion to various sites and of division into different stages, assembly thus becomes “editing” through the general spread of a logic of integration, which took shape on the level of the site (the editing booth), functions and instruments of this practice.
