Cinéma Vérité and Direct Cinema - Text 7

For Gilles Deleuze, cinema can claim to be true because it substitutes for dominant fictions the “story-telling function of the poor”: “Thus the cinema can call itself cinéma-vérité, all the more because it will have destroyed every model of the true so as to become creator and producer of truth. This will not be a cinema of truth but the truth of cinema.”[9]

In fact direct cinema, because it documents “true inscription”[10] and records “the interference of the shooting and of the reality in which it is inscribed”[11], and because it is like an epistemological apparatus[12], has questioned from the beginning the truth potential of images.
