Len Lye
Len Lye was born in New Zealand on 5 July 1901 and died on 15 May 1980. He is considered one of the first filmmakers to have experimented with drawing on film animation. His work led him to use numerous tools, such as surgical instruments, brushes and pencils to produce particular effects on the film strip. He was one of the main sources of inspiration for filmmakers such as Norman McLaren and Pierre Hébert.
He was also known for his experiments with colour film in the 1930s through the use of Gasparcolor, invented by Dr. Bela Gaspar. This procedure consisted in equipping a movie camera with a semi-reflective mirror which divided the spectrum into three monochrome images. Recombining them produced a colour image.
