In this way, depending on what he or she wishes to depict, the animator makes various kinds of guiding marks. For example, to produce a fixed and identical drawing on several frames, the animator will mark a point on an imaginary line connecting the bottom of two perforations, with the ruler making it possible to copy exactly the position of this point from one frame to the next (fig. 1 below). In addition, this system makes it possible to place guide marks for the production of a moving figure by using the ruler diagonally so that the marks guide the animator in placing a figure below these marks in each frame (figs. 2 and 3 below). The virtual line created in this manner reproduces the different stages of the figures movements. The speed of the movement depends on the degree at which the ruler is slanted, which determines whether this movement will be produced in a fewer or greater number of images (figs. 2 and 3). This method was adopted by Caroline Leaf, even though, in her work, the separation between frames is marked materially by a line which she copies, using a transparent ruler, every four perforations (with the help of the size of 70 mm film stock).
