In this sequence from Crisis (Robert Drew, 1963), the cross-cutting, the simultaneity of the actions and the ubiquity of communication channels bring this historic event – the conflict between George Wallace, governor of Alabama, and the Department of Justice following a federal court ruling allowing African American students to attend the University of Alabama – a sense of temporal depth, making palpable the tension in Robert Kennedy’s office (then Attorney General) and the uncertainty of the outcome.
