A simpler friction tripod head was marketed by Fred Hoefner in 1926. It had been adapted for professional use from a design first developed for amateur movie makers using the new 16 mm format. The Mitchell Camera Corporation soon followed suit by introducing its own friction tripod head, which also enabled the operator to control tilts and pans with a handle.
